Gecko Lounge was founded by Paul Kite in 2002 on the site of his house in Chembe Village. Gecko was originally an open sided bar with easy chairs where people could gather over a few drinks. Paul had built the house three years earlier and was working in Blantyre at the time. The loungers started to get hungry and Paul’s cook was called upon to produce snacks to keep them happy.

In 2006 Paul gave up the graphic design business to run Gecko Lounge full time, building the chalets and a dorm. The meals started to be the thing and then the pizza oven was introduced. The lounge was expanded over the beach and an extensive music system was installed for background and party music. The lounge was then extended to create a restaurant. In 2008 two en-suite rooms were added and the dorm was partitioned to make the very popular Reed Room and in 2013 the owners' suite was converted to make a further en-suite double room.
